Allergy Testing: What is it? What kinds are there?

Allergy testing results

Skin Testing

This method tells you if you are allergic to things that may be causing your symptoms. There are 2 types of skin tests: 1. a tiny prick test and 2. an intra-dermal test. By placing a small amount of substances that may cause an allergic reaction (allergens) into the skin, the physician can determine which substances cause the problem. If you are allergic, a small red bump (that itches) will appear within 15-20 minutes of the testing. These results will then be diagnosed by your physician.

RAST Testing

A more expensive blood test that may also show what causes your allergy symptoms. This form of testing is used with food allergies and in situations where skin testing is not possible.

Oral Challenge Test

This test is used for food allergy & sometimes for drug allergy testing. The patient is given an incremental amount of a food or a drug tested up to the maximum tolerable limit.
